Calcium Silicate (Wollastonite Powder)
Profile:
Wollastonite is an odorless, nontoxic silicate. It is
insoluble in water, alcohol, and alkalis, but soluble in
acids. It has low water absorbency, thermal stability,
and thermal conductivity. It has very strong reinforcing
properties, and is as effective a reinforcing agent as
white carbon black with the same grain size
distribution. Since, however, it is less expensive to
produce than white carbon black, it can replace white
carbon black, and is widely used for this purpose. Large
quantities are used as a reinforcing agent in rubber and
plastic, and it is also commonly used as a raw material
or additive in paper, paints and coatings,
pharmaceuticals, inks, and pesticides.
Chemical composition: CaO•mSiO2•nH2O

Uses
Calcium silicate (wollastonite) is used by the rubber,
plastic, papermaking, and paints and coatings
industries. For instance, calcium silicate can improve
paper quality, and is used as a pulp filler because of
its compatibility with the alkaline papermaking process.
It is also used in large quantities as a coating for
cardboard. Kaolin is used as a filler in acid paper,
however. Because of calcium silicate's low heat
conductivity, it is strong, can withstand high
temperatures, is flame retardant, easy to process,
noncorrosive, and nonpolluting. It is consequently used
as an insulating material in thermal ducts, equipment,
kilns, and furnaces in the metallurgical, power, and
chemical engineering industries. It is also used in
fireproof covering materials employed in the inner
walls, outer walls, and roofs of homes and buildings. At
sea, it is used as a fireproofing and insulating
material in the bulkheads, decks, and passageways of
passenger ships, freighters, and oil tankers. In
construction applications, calcium silicate's excellent
fire resistance, sound and heat insulating properties,
moisture resistance, and durability, as well as its
light weight and good vibration resistance, make it
suitable for the walls of high-rise buildings. The
manufacture of calcium silicate generates no waste.
Crushed waste calcium silicate building material can be
recycled and reused as a raw material in building
applications, so it is definitely very environmentally
friendly.

Explanation
1.
Calcium silicate's low water absorbency, thermal
stability, heat conduction, and resin needs ensure its
wide use as a filler in plastics, rubber, paints and
coatings, ceramics, wear materials, insulating
materials, and building materials.
2. It
is used as a strength in her in engineering plastics,
and can replace glass fibers. It can significantly
increase impact resistance and tensile strength,
increase liquidity, boost stiffness and stability, and
cut costs.
3.
It is widely used in industry and shipbuilding. In
paints and coatings, it can enhance mechanical strength,
durability, adhesion, suitability for hard substrates,
and corrosion resistance. It is also used in building
materials, roofing, and powder coatings. |
